Your major surgery step by step.
One to two weeks before your scheduled surgery, you will be expected in preoperative studies and evaluations with different specialists. These include:
1. Workup – Facial measurements by Dr. Hugo Martinez and imaging studies (bone scan, teeth scan, skin scan, and clinical photographs)
2. Blood studies. The anesthesiologist will evaluate them in your preoperative assessment appointment. It would be best if you took them three days before your surgery.
a. Complete blood count.
b. T.P. and TTP coagulation times.
c. 24-element blood chemistry
d. Covid19 PCR test (If you have proof of two vaccines, it can be an antigen test).
3. Preoperative assessment with the anesthesiologist.
4. Preoperative nutritional assessment.
5. Preoperative and postoperative indications by maxillofacial surgery coordinator. Being accompanied by a person who will participate in your recovery is essential.
6. Surgery must be cleared two days in advance.
Follow these indications on the day of your surgery:
- Eight hours fast (including solids and liquids).
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Do not wear jewelry (necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches, rings, etc.).
- Do not wear makeup.
- Do not paint your fingernails or toenails.
- For your discharge, a family member must sign you out.
Post-surgical indications
We’re grateful for your trust and wish you a speedy recovery. We share with you the post-surgical indications:
1. Take the medication as indicated in the prescription prescribed by the surgeon (suspension or injection).
2. It is normal for the area to remain swollen for at least 15 days. It will diminish as it evolves.
3. The patient’s position should be semi-lying down and face up, so their head is higher than their extremities.
4. Complete rest is recommended for the first 72 hours, followed by relative rest from the fourth day. (avoid bending down or carrying heavy objects).
5. Apply cold at 20-minute intervals with a 1-hour rest during the first three days.
6. From the fourth day, apply warmth for 20 minutes with 1 hour of rest for three days.
7. There is a tape placed around the treated area, which should remain for at least three days, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
8. Do not blow your nose or sneeze with your mouth closed.
9. Tooth brushing should be gentle with a small brush head and soft bristles.
10. Chlorhexidine mouth rinse. 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash after every meal for ten days.
11. It is essential not to use a straw or suction for one week.
12. Do not practice sports and/or intense physical activities for five weeks after surgery to avoid bleeding, swelling, or any accident.
13. Avoid exposure to heat sources. (e.g., sun, outdoors, cooking).
14. Don’t smoke.
15. Do not drink alcohol during antibiotic (medicine) treatment.
16. Keeping your follow-up appointment is essential.
