Facial Fillers
Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to add volume, smooth wrinkles and fine lines and enhance facial features. They are usually made of hyaluronic acid or other biocompatible materials that are injected into the skin to restore volume and improve the appearance of aging or sun-damaged skin.
What are they?
Facial fillers are injected into the skin using a very fine needle or cannula. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and is relatively painless, with little or no downtime afterwards. Results are visible immediately and can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type of filler used and the individual’s metabolism.
Benefits
- Restores volume to areas of the face that have lost volume due to aging.
- Smoothes wrinkles, expression lines and other signs of aging.
- Enhances facial features such as the lips, cheeks and jawline.
- Can be a minimally invasive alternative to surgery.
- Results are usually immediate and long-lasting.
Classification
There are several different types of facial fillers, each designed for specific areas of the face and the patient’s individual needs. Some common types of fillers include:
- Hyaluronic acid fillers: Juvederm and Restylane, which are commonly used to add volume to the lips, cheeks and nasolabial folds (smile lines).
- Calcium hydroxyapatite fillers: one of these is Radiesse, which are commonly used to add volume to the cheeks and mid-face.
- Poly-L-lactic acid fillers: such as Sculptra, which are used to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and tone.
- Autologous fat transfer: involves harvesting fat from one area of the body and injecting it into the face to add volume.
