During the intervention, the surgeon makes incisions inside the mouth to access the jawbone. The mandible is cut and repositioned to achieve the desired shape and contour. The intervention usually lasts several hours and may require a hospital stay of one day.

What is it?

Jaw surgery, also known as mandibular osteotomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the shape and structure of the jaw by adjusting the position of the lower jaw. It is usually performed under general anesthesia and involves making incisions inside the mouth to access the jawbone, which is cut and repositioned to achieve the desired shape and contour.

Classification

Osteotomy of the jaw: Consists of cutting and repositioning the jaw bone to improve the shape and contour of the jaw.

Jaw contouring with fillers or implants: Consists of injecting dermal fillers or placing implants (custom or prefabricated) along the jawline to improve the shape and contour of the jaw.

If you have an underdeveloped or misaligned jaw, or if you are unhappy with the shape and contour of your jaw, you may be a good candidate for jaw surgery.

You will likely experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure, but your surgeon will give you a prescription for pain control.

Most people are able to return to work and other normal activities within two weeks after surgery, but it may take several weeks for the swelling to completely go away.
